For a switch that’s truly greener, instead of eating with single-use cutlery, bring a set from home. Roll them in a cloth napkin or beeswax wrap to take them on the go.
Reach for a can, not a plastic bottle: When choosing a beverage at a convenience store, opt for an aluminum can if they are available. Most plastic bottles do not make it to recycling facilities. When they are recycled, bottles are rarely turned back into bottles, but are shredded to make synthetic fibers. Aluminum is easier to recycle. Petroleum-derived plastic is harmful to the environment, so choose metal instead.
Take Care of Your Wardrobe
Look for Natural Fibers: Washing clothes made from synthetic fibers releases microplastics into waterways. Try looking for items that are made from cotton, linen, or other natural material. Avoid synthetic materials such as polyester, rayon, nylon, and elastane. Natural fabrics can last longer than synthetic fabrics, which means less textile waste in the long run.
Wash Cold: Using cold water for laundry cuts down on energy use. Cold water also helps preserve dye and can reduce fabric stretching. Taking good care of clothing keeps items in closets, not landfills, which is good for your wallet and the planet.
Eat More Plant Based Foods
Going vegan is a great way to help the Earth, but a vegan diet may not work for every person’s lifestyle. Instead, try eating fewer animal-derived products. If plant-based meat alternatives are too adventurous, start with dairy-free milk alternatives such as oat, soy, or nut milks.
